The Five Spiritual Elements
Learn how these spiritual elements make up your energy and how you can use them to transform yourself and your life!
Fire. Earth. Air. Water. Spirit.
These five elements have been used throughout history in many different cultures and belief systems to better comprehend the world and its cycles and patterns. The world, and we as human beings, are made up of these magical essences. They are natural, solitary forms of energy that come together to create the whole universe.
The element of Spirit is definitive, with the other four elements varying in influence. We all have a mixture of these spiritual elements within us which makes each of us so unique! They give us a good idea of the makeup of our energy; who we are, our tendencies, and where we may need more balance within ourselves.
We usually have one or two of the four elements (fire, earth, air, and water) that are more prominent within us, with the other two or three that require more awareness and intentionality.
In this article, I will describe each of the five elements, what they represent within us, and how we can notice imbalances and become more aware of our energy.
The Five Elements
Fire
Fire is a masculine and active energy (yang). The element of fire represents action, inspiration, and intuition. It is what fuels you and keeps you going! Your fire is your drive, motivation, and ambition in life. It gives you the willpower to be courageous and confident.
The fire element represents your soul, the divine spark within you that desires and strives for experiences in this world. When you are inspired, you feel the energy in your being which fuels the actions that you take to get to where you want to be.
This element corresponds to your passions and how you express your true self! This expression usually comes through the way you play and have fun; tapping into your inner child. It also corresponds to your sexual, protective, and warrior nature. How you stand up for what you want and how you protect yourself and others shows up in this fiery essence.
An imbalance of fire energy can lead to battles, revenge, a defensive demeanour, anger, and abuse of power. It can also show up as an absence of action due to a lack of courage, self-confidence, or willpower.
If you’re lacking fire energy, you could have a hard time getting inspired, motivated, or taking action on your ideas. On the flip side, if you are too much in this element, you could take action without thinking, overexert yourself, and burn yourself out.
Do something you absolutely love doing, something you’re passionate about, and you will connect with your fire element. What sparks inspiration in you? How can you express your creativity? What do you do for fun?
The astrological signs associated with this element include Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. Aries can be symbolized as the lighting of a match, the beginning of fire. Aries is a motivational leader and warrior and will light the path. Leo is like a bonfire, a steady and constant power. A bonfire is a healing space where souls can come together for inspiration, play, and creativity. Sagittarius on the other hand, is the torch that Aries lights. It is the persistent power and belief that travels the path and shows the way.
Earth
The element of Earth is feminine and passive (yin). It represents your connection to this physical realm and your physical body. You experience this earthly energy through your physical senses, values, and possessions. You express this element in the way you build stability, tend to your belongings, and achieve success in this material realm.
What you value in life leads to what you want to create and have in your life. For example, if you value relationships, you will focus on deepening relationships. If you value money, you will focus on creating things that will bring you wealth. This element is associated with how you make money, the things you are attracted to, and what makes you feel secure.
The earth element is also associated with your nurturing qualities and how you take care of the things and people in your life. This is shown through the way you give love and support to make things grow and prosper.
If you have an imbalance with the earth element, you can become too materialistic; constantly looking for physical things in your reality to make you feel happy and secure. You could also become addicted to things that please you through the senses, such as sex, money, overeating, workaholism, and binge-watching TV.
An imbalance could also show up as an incongruence between your values and what you’re manifesting in your physical reality. When what you’re experiencing does not align with your values, you can feel off-balance or disconnected from your true self and purpose in life.
Connecting with nature, putting your bare feet on the ground, and knowing that Mother Earth has an abundance of resources to provide you can help you connect to this element.
The astrological signs associated with this element include Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. Taurus can be thought of as a seedling growing in fertile soil. It secures its roots into the ground to grow tall and stable, which enables it to nurture others. Virgo can be symbolized as a crop field being tended to. It is organized, detailed, and ready to provide resources for all in the community. Capricorn is like a tall mountain top, overseeing and managing everything below. It rises high in the sky with the ability to provide a higher perspective on the land below.
Air
The Air element is masculine and active (yang). It represents your thoughts, words, and ideas. It is your mind, imagination and mental activity expressed through the way you communicate with yourself (self-talk) and others. Air is associated with intelligence and creativity. It inspires you to be curious, build relationships through communication, and realize your hopes and dreams.
This element is enchanting and magical, as it is associated with life itself (through breath), higher knowledge, and connection to Spirit. Psychic and intuitional downloads through the mind are connected to this element. As you know, the mind is everything, and what you think about you create. You can use air to imagine and visualize what you want to manifest in the physical world.
What you enjoy learning about, studying, and connecting with is found in your air element. So is the ability to recognize your thoughts, see things from different perspectives, and create with intention. This also allows you to connect with others in a more meaningful way.
An imbalance of the air element can manifest as being “in your head” too much. If your energy is up around your head, you can feel ungrounded and unstable, and get distracted easily. This can lead to inaction because you enjoy being in your imagination and feel more comfortable there than in the physical realm.
A lack of this element could also show up as a lack of ideas and creativity. You may also have a hard time communicating your thoughts or have a difficult time seeing situations from different perspectives.
By focusing on your breath, you can slow yourself down and connect with your air element in an intentional way. This can quiet your mind and allow you to be more observant of your thoughts. What thoughts are for your highest good? Is it your ego or higher self talking? What thoughts are automatically recurring?
The astrological signs associated with this element include Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. Gemini is represented by gusts of wind, carrying curious thoughts and ideas around and sharing them with others. Libras are symbolized by a calm, comfortable breeze, creating flow, harmony, and comfort in the environment. Aquarians are like windy storms that shake things up and break patterns of thought. They provide new ideas, perspectives, and ways to do things that could better the world and humanity.
Water
The water element is feminine and passive (yin). It represents your emotions, feelings, and intuition. It is also associated with your subconscious instincts; your fight, flight, or freeze tendencies. The water element represents your capacity for empathy and connection, and how you can be compassionate with yourself and others. Therefore, it’s connected to how deep or in touch you can get with your own emotions.
Since your subconscious mind stores feelings as memories, this element is associated with your memories and your past. It is associated with your dreams (while asleep), secrets, and anything you keep private or to yourself.
Water in the physical world ebbs and flows just like your feelings do. When you feel loving emotions such as love, compassion, grace, and gratitude, you are in flow with the Universe and your natural way of being.
However, when you have feelings stemming from fear, such as anxiety, stress, hate, doubt, and guilt, your flow becomes stuck and stagnant. Imagine a beautiful, flowing waterfall, compared to an unmoving, grimy swamp. The flow of your water element is important in how you process your feelings and emotions. Stuck or stagnant emotions can create dis-ease in your body, leading to illness and health issues.
If you have an imbalance of the water element, you may be overly empathic, picking up on other people’s emotions without realizing it. This can lead to confusion and chaos because you don’t know what energy is yours and what is somebody else’s!
An imbalance can also show up in a lack of emotional control, tending to react automatically or becoming overly emotional. You could feel like you’re a victim of your feelings and lack the power to create change within you.
To connect to this element within you, you can tune in to your own feelings in the present moment. You can do this by scanning your body and being curious about what you pick up on. Where are those feelings in your body? Why are they there? What are they telling you?
The astrological signs associated with this element include Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. Cancer is like a natural hot spring, both healing and nurturing. It is protected and makes you feel warm and comfortable. Scorpio is like the depths of the sea, dark and hidden, full of secrets. Scorpio encourages trusting your instincts and intuition in the unknown. Pisces is like a flowing waterfall, constantly moving and being generous with its essence. It is compassionate and sees the duality in its flow as it turns to stillness.
Spirit
This is the most important element because, without it, you would die in your physical body. It is what keeps you alive and conscious in this physical realm. Your soul (fire) evolves from lifetime to lifetime, your physical body (earth) you leave behind in each one, and your mind (air) and emotions (water) transform based on what you learn in each life.
One thing that never changes is the element of Spirit, the Divine Consciousness that flows through every human being and throughout this universe.
This element in the physical realm is expressed in your connection to Spirit and the collective consciousness. It is where healing takes place within you and where enlightenment is gained. It is the energy of unconditional love and understanding that we are all connected as One.
When you tap into your divine connection with Spirit, anything is possible. How do you connect with Source the Creator of all things? What spiritual practices do you do on a regular basis? What messages do you receive from Spirit?
Creating Balance
Creating balance with the elements takes practice. First, you have to know what elements are more dominant within you and what elements you might need more of to feel more empowered.
I have briefly described what an imbalance of each element could show up as in yourself and your life. This information is not exhaustive; however, at least now you have some basic knowledge to start reflecting on your elemental makeup.
In myself, my most dominant elements are water, air and earth, and then a teenie bit of fire! This combination of elements is expressed in my empathic and intuitional nature, as I feel things very strongly. So strongly that I needed to learn to protect my own energy and not take on everybody else’s emotions.
I am also in my head a lot, thinking creatively and coming up with new ideas or ways to do things. I visualize and imagine many things, and thoughts are constantly flowing in and out of my mind. This has definitely helped me manifest the things I want in the physical world; however, sometimes I spend too much time up there! Writing also helps because it’s a way to get my thoughts out of my head and into my physical reality.
Even though I have some earth, I do find I need to remind myself to ground my energy when I’m in my head too much or getting too emotional. My lack of fire means I have a hard time putting my ideas into action, so sometimes I must talk myself into doing things. A helpful mantra lately has been “just do it!”, instead of overthinking everything.
Gaining this knowledge about myself has helped me to be more compassionate and forgiving towards myself. Knowing why I am the way I am because of my elemental makeup has given me more awareness and allows me to be more intentional in my life. It gives me more power over myself, helping me master my thoughts, feelings, and actions.
I hope that learning your elemental makeup can help you to better know yourself too and bring you more peace, clarity, and power!
To learn what elements you are made of, Astrology and reading your natal chart can be a great start! This is how I began learning about my elements, and how I came to know myself better. It brought me peace and clarity and I learned to love and accept myself on a deeper level.
